Will Donating Eggs Hurt My Fertility?

If you’re considering donating your eggs to help a couple or individual build a family, you probably already know about the process’s many benefits. In researching the procedure, however, you may be wondering about potential risks as well.
Egg Donation Does Not Decrease Fertility
Many prospective donors often wonder if donating their eggs will make them unlikely to be able to conceive afterward.
While women are born with a finite number of eggs (with about 300,000 left at puberty), the overwhelming majority of those eggs will die without being used, and only about 300 to 400 will be ovulated.
Donating eggs requires a very small fraction of that reserve, and the ovary stimulation process makes use of some of the eggs that would die off anyway. In fact, women can typically donate eggs up to six times as long as they are clinically approved for repeat procedures.
A 2012 study in Belgium found what researchers expected: Donating eggs does not reduce the chances of getting pregnant yourself. In that study, of the 60 women who tried to conceive after donating eggs, 57 were able to conceive without help. Of the remaining three who required fertility treatment, two sought treatment due to their partner’s infertility.
Donating Eggs Provides Insight Into Your Own Fertility
The screening process that donor candidates undergo to determine their eligibility provides information about their fertility, which can help them plan for their own family building in the future. Plus, all donors receive a copy of their physical, genetic, and fertility results to keep for their records.
MyEggBank even offers free egg freezing – usually a costly process – for women who have completed three egg donation cycles through our program, affording them more freedom to choose when they want to build a family of their own.
