How to Find Support While Going Through Fertility Care
by MyEggBankin InfertilitySeptember 29th, 2022
When patients are diagnosed with infertility, the experience can be overwhelming. Many who face fertility challenges often find themselves surrounded by friends and family members who have never experienced trouble conceiving. Not only is it difficult to navigate infertility when it seems like no one around you understands, but dealing with things like pregnancy announcements, gender reveals, and baby showers can suddenly trigger a deluge of emotions.
One of the most difficult parts of going through infertility is the feeling that you’re going through it alone. However, fortunately, there are a number of ways to seek infertility support. As people become more aware of fertility issues and fertility care, the easier it is to help patients feel less alone as they start their path to parenthood. If you’re new to the fertility community, it can be helpful to learn about the types of support resources available, and where to find them.
Infertility Support 101
Support From Your Inner Circle
Turning to friends and family can be a source of support, but it is important to be selective about who to turn to and which information to disclose. However, sometimes fertility patients hold back because they believe that their loved ones won’t understand what they’re going through. The infertility journey can feel very isolating. Some patients lose sight of the fact that, even if the people in their inner circle haven’t experienced infertility themselves, they still care and want to be a great source of support. For every fertility patient, the decisions of who to share with and the details you share about your family-building journey are different.
Part of opening up to your loved ones about your family-building journey may include providing information to people who are unfamiliar with infertility, depending on how comfortable you are discussing the subject and educating them. This is especially true for individuals and couples who are utilizing some form of third-party reproduction, such as egg donation, which many people outside of the fertility world are unfamiliar with. If you have the bandwidth to explain these topics openly, it can be a very empowering experience. If not, that’s perfectly fine too.
Fertility Support Groups
While friends and family can be a great source of support, there are many reasons why someone might prefer to only discuss their family-building journey with a neutral third party or someone who has dealt with fertility issues themselves. Luckily, there are many fertility support groups, both in-person and online, where people can find emotional and mental assistance from others who understand what the journey entails.
Online Communities
Many people find support by following others sharing their fertility journey on Instagram and Facebook. Common hashtags are #ttc (trying to conceive) #fertilityjourney #infertility and many more. By seeing fertility through their lens, you will quickly realize that you are not alone! Your fertility clinic is active on social media pages. Be sure to follow the clinic to stay informed about different in-person and virtual events.
Your Fertility Clinic
One basic support resource you might have not yet considered is your fertility clinic. While your time at the clinic is probably mostly spent with your doctor and the nurses who are performing the various tests and procedures to help you grow your family, many clinics offer patients a variety of resources (e.g. counseling, patient education, etc.) to utilize in order to help with the stresses of care. The path to parenthood via fertility care is a multifaceted experience and your providers are there to help you face all aspects of it. If you’re struggling in any way, it’s worth it to talk to your fertility team so that they can guide you toward the resources you need to feel more at ease and supported.
